What is the difference between single-phase and three-phase power?
Single-phase
Most common in single-family homes. Single-phase, 230 V. Sufficient for most household uses and for charging an electric vehicle with a compatible charging station.
Three-phase
Found primarily in businesses or certain types of housing. Three-phase, 400 V. Provides more power, which is useful for high-power applications (e.g., high-power charging stations, multiple vehicles).
Why is this important for charging?
If your system is single-phase, choose a compatible charging station and charger (often 7.4 kW max). If you have three-phase power, you can opt for a three-phase charging station and charger (up to 22 kW), which reduces charging time. If you plug a single-phase vehicle into a three-phase charging station, charging will be limited to the capacity of the onboard charger.
