shutdown of the 2G/3G mobile networks

Telecoms operators are gradually phasing out 2G and 3G networks in Europe. This deactivation, initiated in 2024, will continue until 2029, according to a timetable specific to each operator, country by country.

This situation will have an impact on the operation of widespread equipment and products (e.g. remote monitoring systems, elevators, home medical devices, etc.).

In the UK, the 2G and 3G mobile networks are gradually being switched off over the next few years. To find out more about the mobile network shutdown, please visit the ofcom website.

From these dates onwards, the loss of the 2G and 3G network will render the emergency call service (or "eCall") feature inoperable in geographical areas where neither 2G nor 3G is available. It will remain operational in countries and geographical areas where a 2G or 3G network is still active.

To find out whether a vehicle is equipped with eCall, simply check the overhead console between the driver's seat and the front passenger seat: if there is an "SOS" button, the vehicle has emergency call (or "eCall") functionality. The SOS button should only be pressed in an emergency.  

There are two methods to activate the eCall, in the event of an accident in which an airbag is deployed, the vehicle automatically transmits a call to the emergency services, or it can also be activated manually by pressing the SOS button. Further details on eCall can be found in your vehicle owner's manual.

Please note: driving the vehicle itself is not affected by the shutdown of 2G or 3G networks. The vehicle remains fully compliant with its certification.

Renault Group continues to assess the impact of the 2G and 3G shutdown on a model-by-model and country-by-country basis, with a view to identifying whether alternatives are possible.

Update July 2026

An update from the Government has been released on 29th July 2026. This communication is focused on the introduction and network functionality for the Next Generation eCall, (referred to as NG in the Government communication), which is 4G/5G. This communication references a delay to 4G/5G network availability until March 2027.

eCall on current Renault products with an SOS button is 2G/3G.

When new Renault products are built with 4G/5G eCall, which will be coming to market shortly, in the absence of 4G/5G networks, the products will be able to use 2G/3G networks.
