The Renault 5 E-Tech electric has carried away two major honours at the AM Awards 2026, after it was named both ‘New Car of the Year’ and ‘New EV of the Year’ at the black-tie ceremony held at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge London on 14th May.
The double success adds further momentum to Renault’s multi-award-winning electric supermini, with AM’s dealer audience recognising the Renault 5 E-Tech electric’s combination of attractive design, technical innovation, practicality and affordability.
Outlining the appeal that saw the Renault 5 E-Tech electric triumph in a highly competitive market, Tim Rose, Editor of Automotive Management, said: “The Renault 5 stands out as one of the most significant new car launches in recent years, successfully redefining expectations around electric vehicles and bringing much needed enthusiasm to the small car segment.
“For our dealer readers to vote for it to win not only ‘New EV of the Year’, but also the headline ‘New Car of the Year’ trophy in this year’s AM Awards, is a testimony to the impact this fantastic car has made in the UK market. The Renault 5 created a buzz in the industry even before its sales began in the UK and that buzz has been sustained as more and more of these stylish, well-equipped and, crucially, affordable EVs leave Renault showrooms in the hands of happy customers.”
The AM Awards’ ‘New Car of the Year’ category recognises models that have made an immediate impact on the market, moving their segment on while delivering strong appeal for dealers. The increasingly hotly-contested ‘New EV of the Year’ category, meanwhile, highlights electric models that combine attractive design, technical innovation and practicality.
Adam Wood, Managing Director, Renault UK, said: “These awards are especially meaningful because they come from AM’s dealer audience, the people who understand better than anyone what makes a car resonate with customers and succeed in showrooms. Renault 5 E-Tech electric has quickly become a defining car for Renault, bringing an iconic name into the electric era with the character, technology, usability and value that appeal to customers’ heads and hearts. To be recognised as both ‘New Car of the Year’ and ‘New EV of the Year’ underlines how strongly it has connected with the market.”
The Renault 5 E-Tech electric was the country’s most popular electric car in April according to the latest data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. It formed part of a strong month for Renault’s EV line-up, with registrations of Renault 5, Renault 4, Renault Megane and Renault Scenic accounting for more than 49% of all Renault UK passenger car registrations.
Building on this success, Renault 5 E-Tech electric is now available with a one-pedal driving function as standard on techno+ trim and above. First seen on the versatile Renault 4 E-Tech electric, the system introduces a fourth level of regenerative braking, allowing drivers to slow and bring the vehicle to a complete stop using only the accelerator, which is particularly beneficial in stop-start traffic and urban driving conditions.
Renault 5 E-Tech electric is offered in three trim levels with a choice of two powertrains. Highlights include the OpenR Link infotainment system with Google built-in, a chassis tuned for agility, and practical charging solutions. Depending on version, it offers up to 252 miles WLTP driving range and can charge from 15-80% in around 30 minutes.
Eligible for the full Electric Car Grant, Renault 5 E-Techelectric prices start from £21,495 on-the-road.
