Renault Sport has released a new video showing the build of its New CLIO competition car designated for use in racing, rallying and rallycross.

The 80-second film begins with a flashback through the ages with footage that reflects the manufacturer’s proud motorsport heritage.

From the 8 Gordini racer that started Renault’s passion for single-model racing championships in the 60s, we move to its successor of the Seventies, the 5 TL/TS.

A flash of the Eighties follows with a spectacularly sideways 5 Turbo rally car. Then it’s on to the Nineties and the phase 1 CLIO Cup and CLIO Rally ‘Maxi’ race and rally cars.

Into the Noughties and there’s a burst of race action from the CLIO 197 and 220 models before the viewer is taken inside Renault Sport’s famous manufacturing premises.

There, we get a close-up of the build of the latest generation CLIO as technicians install brakes, engines, exhaust systems and other componentry, and begin applying the first layers of paint to its shell.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, five cars in Rally specification were exported across the Atlantic where they made their debut in the World Rally Championship’s round in Mexico.

This followed the very first CLIO Rally car to roll of the production line being demonstrated as a course car on the WRC’s season-opening Monte Carlo Rally.

The original CLIO Cup race car to come from the same factory has also made its first debut in the UK this year, at January’s Autosport Show.

This was a precursor to the new CLIO Cup UK racing championship which had been scheduled to begin alongside the British GT Championship in mid-May but which has now been postponed until further notice.

Meanwhile, the video also includes footage of CLIO Rally being tested on a French asphalt stage, plus the first miles being put on the machine in both Cup (race) and RX (rallycross) trim.

Although motorsport globally is on hold for the foreseeable future, orders for New CLIO in either Cup, Rally or RX guises can still be placed.

Each version is powered by the same turbocharged 1.3 engine which produces 180bhp.

Highly versatile, the same car can, in theory, be transformed from Cup to Rally to RX specification should the owner wish for use across all three disciplines.

CLIO Cup is priced €37,900 + VAT, CLIO Rally €42,000 + VAT and CLIO RX at €36,900 + VAT.
