How do traffic jams affect driving range?

Traffic jams generally have a limited impact on an electric car's range. Unlike an internal combustion engine, an electric motor consumes energy only during acceleration. When the vehicle is stopped, only the air conditioning, heating, or other electrical equipment consume energy.

In heavy traffic, a car often alternates between decelerating and braking. With energy recovery during braking (regenerative braking), some of the energy is fed back into the battery every time the vehicle slows down, which helps preserve the driving range.

In traffic jams, an electric car is therefore often more efficient than a petrol or diesel model, while offering a smoother and more comfortable ride.
