For anyone who qualifies for the Motability Scheme, choosing a new car should be about finding the model that makes everyday life easier, not worrying about insurance, servicing or what happens if something goes wrong.
That’s why I’ve always thought the all-inclusive nature of Motability is its biggest attraction. In 2026, the Renault Motability range gives customers a huge choice of excellent vehicles from Captur to Symbioz and Austral, the all-electric Renault 5 and Renault 4, and nine-seat Trafic Passenger. There have also been important scheme changes from July this year, so read on to find out exactly what’s included.
How Renault Motability works in 2026
The Motability model remains refreshingly simple: if you receive a qualifying mobility allowance, you can use all or part of it to lease a new Renault for three years. Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) leases last for five years.
Depending on the model and version, there may also be a one-off Advance Payment. Renault’s guide to how the Motability Scheme works explains the details, but the big attraction is that this is so much more than simply leasing a car.
Every three-year lease includes insurance for up to three drivers, servicing and maintenance, full breakdown cover and tyre repair and replacement. Choose an electric vehicle and a home charging point with standard installation is included where suitable, or there’s access to the BP pulse charging network.
For many people looking at Motability cars in the UK, having so many normal ownership costs wrapped into one package is a real advantage.
What’s new with Renault’s Motability scheme?
There are three key changes for new orders placed on or after 1 July 2026, introduced following UK Government tax changes to help keep the Scheme sustainable.
- Mileage: the mileage allowance is now 30,000 miles over a standard three-year lease. Although for WAV customers this will be different - with a 50,000 mileage allowance over a standard five years.
- Tyre replacement: you'll be limited to six tyres over those three years, including up to four replaced because of damage. For WAV customers, this is 10 tyres over five years (with up to six for damage).
- EU breakdown cover: if you’re taking your car outside the UK, you’ll now need a VE103 certificate, you’ll have to pay a small administration fee and tell the RAC before travelling.

Who is eligible for Renault Motability?
The starting point to check if you’re eligible is Renault’s Motability eligibility guide. You’ll need a qualifying mobility allowance and normally at least 12 months remaining on the award when you apply.
Qualifying payments include the higher-rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance, enhanced-rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment, War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement and Armed Forces Independence Payment, with qualifying Social Security Scotland mobility benefits also covered through the Scottish scheme.
Do I need to drive to be eligible for the Motability Scheme?
You don’t necessarily need to drive. A Motability customer can have nominated drivers, so the Renault can be driven by someone else for the customer’s benefit – every three year lease includes insurance for up to three eligible drivers.
Which Renault Motability car should you choose?
This is where the 2026 Renault line-up gets interesting. The Captur Motability range adds a higher seating position and crossover practicality without becoming a large car.
For more family space, the Symbioz Motability range combines useful flexibility with Renault’s latest connected technology, while the Austral Motability range brings a larger, more sophisticated SUV feel, full hybrid E-Tech power and openR link with Google built-in1 on selected versions.
Then there are two of my favourite EVs: the Renault 5 E-Tech electric and Renault 4 E-Tech electric on Motability. They prove electric cars on Motability don’t have to be anonymous – They look fantastic, are easy to drive and the technology is simple to use and presented in a friendly and intuitive way.
At the other end of the scale, the Trafic Passenger Motability range offers nine-seat practicality for customers needing much more passenger space.
How much do Renault Motability offers cost?
Advance Payments vary by model and specification and can change each quarter, so keep a watchful eye on the live offer pages.
Renault also publishes a downloadable Motability price guide, but because prices and terms can change, I’d always compare it with the live offers before ordering. And remember, the best Motability lease option isn’t automatically the one with the lowest advance payment; it’s the car that fits your driving, access, passenger and luggage needs that matters most.
How do you apply for a Renault on Motability?
Once you know you’re eligible, the process is painless. Look through the Renault Motability offers, shortlist the cars that suit you and arrange a test drive with a Renault retailer. If you need adaptations for driving, access or carrying mobility equipment, discuss them with your retailer at this stage.
When placing the order, you should bring driving licences for any named drivers, your award entitlement letter and proof of address. Use the test drive properly, too: check seating height, door opening, visibility, boot access and whether any mobility equipment fits easily. A specification sheet can tell you plenty, but it can’t tell you whether a car works comfortably for your life – that’s why a good test drive is so important.
Why Renault Motability is worth considering
I reckon Renault’s strength on Motability in 2026 is the amount of choice. Captur covers the smaller-car end, Symbioz and Austral provide increasingly spacious family options, Trafic Passenger answers more specialist passenger-carrying needs, while Renault 5 and Renault 4 make electric Motability genuinely desirable. With the insurance, servicing, maintenance, breakdown assistance and EV charging support all included in the lease, a Renault on Motability is an appealingly simple way to run a new car.
The latest changes to the scheme make it more important to understand your mileage and tyre needs before signing, but the proposition remains strong: choose the right Renault, know what your lease includes and let the Scheme take care of much of the day-to-day ownership admin.
These cars are available at a fixed weekly amount for the whole of your lease agreement. The remainder of your allowance, including any annual increases, will be paid directly to you by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) or Veterans UK depending on which allowance you receive. It's the most affordable way to access a car on the Motability scheme.
