How do you charge an electric car?
Charging an electric car is simple: just plug it in, and it does the rest. Here's what you need to know:
There are two types of current:
- AC (alternating current): used by most residential and public charging stations.
- DC (direct current): used by fast-charging points, often located on motorways and increasingly in commercial areas, hotel car parks, and so on.
Why two types? The battery operates on direct current (DC). If you charge at an AC charging station, the vehicle's built-in charger converts the AC current to DC. At a DC fast-charging station, the conversion is performed by the station itself, which speeds up charging.
What equipment should I use?
- At home, use a standard or heavy-duty outlet with a Mode 2 cable (Flexicharger)
- At home or on the go, at an AC charging station, use a Mode 3 cable.
- When on the go, at a DC charging station, the cable is tethered to the station.
Please note: electric Renault E-Tech vehicles come as standard with a Mode 3 charge cable, compatible with AC charging stations. The Mode 2 cable, intended for charging from a domestic or reinforced socket, is available as an option.
How can I pay and make charging easier?
Renault offers solutions to make it easier to access public charging stations while on the road:
- The charging card, charge pass: a single card that gives you access to one of Europe’s largest charging networks.
- The plug & charge* feature: no need for a card, simply plug in your Renault electric E-Tech, and charging and billing happen automatically.
*the plug & charge feature is available only with a compatible vehicle (check the My Renault app) and at compatible charging stations.
