Why do charge times vary depending on the charging point?

Charge time mainly depends on three factors:

1. The power of the charging point

  • Domestic socket or heavy-duty socket: limited power, suitable for slow charging over several hours.
  • Home or public AC charging point: medium power for faster everyday charging.
  • Public DC fast-charging station: very high power, allowing users to regain a significant amount of range.

2. The type of current

  • Alternating current (AC): used at home and at most public charging stations, the current must be converted to direct current (DC) by the vehicle's onboard charger, which limits the charging speed.
  • Direct current (DC): used at fast-charging stations, the conversion is performed directly by the charging station, allowing for faster charging.

3. Battery capacity and technology

A high-capacity battery generally requires more energy to fully charge, which can increase the charging time.

In addition, the maximum charging power (expressed in kW) is limited by the vehicle's onboard charger in order to preserve the battery's performance and service life. This means that a more powerful charging station does not necessarily result in a faster charging time, depending on the power of the vehicle's onboard charger.
