Electric vehicle FAQs

What impact does cold weather have on charging?

The maximum permissible charging power for each electric vehicle changes depending on the battery charge status (%) and its temperature (°C).

If the battery is too cold, the management system limits the power to protect the components. As a result, charging time increases, especially at DC fast-charging stations. Why have this protection? Lithium-ion batteries are sensitive to extreme temperatures. Limiting power prevents premature wear and ensures safety.

How can you optimise charging in cold weather?

  • Plan your charge using the onboard planner or the MyRenault app to find the most suitable charge point at the best time, and prepare the battery for charging.
  • Pre-condition the battery (depending on the model): Renault offers a pre-heat system to ready the battery before a charge, keeping charging speed optimal.
