Mild hybrid, E-Tech full hybrid or plug-in hyper hybrid: what are the differences?
There are three categories of hybrid vehicles based on their hybrid system:
- the self-charging hybrid,
- the plug-in hybrid,
- and the mild hybrid
All of them are equipped with an internal combustion engine, a high-voltage battery, and at least one electric motor.
But the traction, the type of transmission, the charging method, their fuel consumption and their environmental impact differ.
A mild hybrid operates with the petrol engine running continuously, while the electric motor is used for starting the vehicle and occasionally to provide additional power. The transmission can be manual or automatic.
100% hybrid (full hybrid) vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles are both based on intelligent switching between electric and combustion powertrains.
The difference between them lies in the capacity of their battery and the charging method.
With E-Tech full hybrid, you don't need to plug in your vehicle to recover energy. This energy is recovered while driving through regenerative braking as well as from the energy generated by the internal combustion engine.
For E-Tech hyper-hybrid technology (Renault plug-in hybrid), you will need to charge the vehicle regularly using a standard socket or a charging station to optimise your fuel consumption.
