hybrid vehicle FAQs

What is the role of the high-voltage battery?

As with a combustion-powered vehicle, the high-voltage battery stores the energy needed for the hybrid vehicle to operate properly.

It can be charged in three different ways, two of which require no action on the driver's part:

  • by recovering energy during deceleration and braking, known as regenerative braking (kinetic energy, associated with motion, is converted into electrical energy)
  • by using the internal combustion engine to generate electricity
  • by plugging the vehicle into an electric charging station, but this option is only available for plug-in hybrid vehicles
